Powerwall FAQs
How long will a Tesla Powerwall power my home?
In an outage, your Powerwall(s) will automatically disconnect from the grid and restore electricity in your home in a matter of milliseconds. The duration of outage protection with Powerwall 3 depends on your starting charge level, energy usage, how many batteries you have, and the amount of solar feeding your home or recharging your Powerwall(s). Click here for a more detailed guide of what to expect.
How many Tesla Powerwalls should I get?
For many customers, one Powerwall is sufficient. However, depending on your personal usage, backup desires, and utility bill savings potential, your Sunrun consultant may recommend more than one Powerwall. Give us a call to get in touch with a Sunrun consultant today.
Where will my Tesla Powerwall battery be placed?
A certified Sunrun installer will mount your Tesla Powerwall on the wall, usually next to your electrical panel inside your garage or on the outside of your home.
How much does Tesla Powerwall cost?
You can get Tesla Powerwall for as little as $0 down. Plus, both our monthly and full amount leases come with worry-free performance and 24/7 monitoring and maintenance.

Can I add Tesla Powerwall to my existing Sunrun solar system?
At this time, we only offer Tesla Powerwall as an add-on to an existing Sunrun installation in California. If you’re outside of California, stay tuned for future opportunities to add to your Sunrun system.
What is the difference between Tesla Powerwall and other batteries?
Power: Powerwall 3 can power over twice as much simultaneously as a standard LG Chem or SolarEdge battery. Note however that similar to a cellphone or laptop, battery life declines more quickly when using more energy all at once, so if you’re anticipating a longer outage, being mindful of your usage is wise.
Battery life: Another key difference between Powerwall and our LG Chem or SolarEdge offerings is the battery capacity. Powerwall offers 13.5kWh of storage capacity for extended battery life compared to 9.6kWh.
App experience: The Tesla app has a user-friendly interface available to Sunrun customers with one or more Powerwalls that lets you access additional energy insights related to your home energy production, consumption, and storage.
“Blinkless” backup: Powerwall features "blinkless" outage transition, which guarantees uninterrupted power supply during outages, eliminating any flicker or interruption in electricity. While many solar batteries transition power within seconds, "blinkless" backup power means your clocks and router won’t reset.
Stacking: Finally, you can stack multiple Powerwalls in your new Sunrun installation to increase flexibility and protection in an outage, particularly in extended outages.
